Fall Maple Tree

Hope Valley California settlers cabin, fall colors, aspens

Fall comes to Hope Valley high in the Sierras.  First signs of Fall are in groves of Aspens, whose leaves turn taxicab yellow and literally sparkle as they quiver in afternoon breezes.  Here an old ranch house is set among the many colors of Fall including aspens just starting to turn.

Hakone Japanese Garden gate, Mon, entrance gate, japanese tea garden, saratoga california

The grand entrance gate, or MON, at Hakone Gardens in Saratoga.  The gate welcomes visitors and marks transition from the mundane world outside to the richly symbolic gardens inside.  Built in 1937 from a single redwood log, the gate's design contains many carved cultural symbols typical of these structures found throughout Japan.

Hakone Japanese Garden foot bridge, soribashi

Arched pathway bridges, or SORIBASHI, like this one in Hakone Gardens have much symbolism in a Japanese  garden's design.  Here, crossing over a pond, it can symbolize transitions such as overcoming difficult challenges or entering a new phase of life.

Ferndale California cattle barn

An Old Barn near Ferndale, an historic dairy farming region near the mouth of the Eel River.  Not sure how old it is, or why it situated slightly up the hillside.  Could be that the grazing fields near by flood and the elevated barn provides cattle a safe haven.  It looks to be still in use.

El Capitan, Merced River, reflection, Yosemite Valley, Yosemite national park

Yosemite Valley's iconic El Capitan reflected in still waters of the Merced River.  The massive granite cliff, gateway to the Valley, attracts expert climbers from around the world.  On this day 27 were working their way to the top nearly 3,000 feet above the valley floor.
